South Hokkaido from Sapporo
Itinerary Summary
Day 1 – Leave Sapporo for Noboribetsu
After breakfast at the hotel in Sapporo, head to Noboribetsu city and visit the Noboribetsu Bear Ranch located atop Shimagaru peak at an altitude of 550m. Here you can observe and interact with the large Hokkaido brown bear populace. Marvel at the behavioral differences in the male and female bears along with their cubs.
Then you will travel 6km inland from Noboribetsu City to the river valley and the smaller town of Noboribetsu-onsen. Jigokudani or “Hell Valley” is an appropriately named valley just above the town, which displays hot steam vents, sulfurous streams, and other volcanic activities. Continue to Mount Usu, a volcano which has erupted four times in the past 100 years; most recently in the year 2000. The Usuzan Ropeway (tramway) brings you close to the volcano’s summit where you can enjoy breathtaking, panoramic views of Lake Toya and neighboring Showa Shinzan. Tonight, you will stay at an Onsen resort hotel.

Day 2 – Transfer to Hakodate and Full Day Tour
After breakfast, head to Hakodate, the city and port located in Oshima Subprefecture. Here, in a Trappistine Convent created by French nuns almost a century ago, you can walk the vestibule replete with statues of the Virgin Mary and Joan of Arc. Tour the beautiful buildings and surroundings, built in classic European style, while learning about the lives of the nuns residing here.
Then take a local tram ride to Goryokaku Park, which is designated as a ‘Japanese Historical Heritage Site’. This expansive park is highlighted by the 200-year-old, star-shaped, Goryokaku Fort. Satisfy your sweet tooth with the flavorful ice creams sold in the park, and also sample varieties of kelp products such as kelp ice cream and kelp sugars. You will end the day at Mt. Hakodate, taking a cable car ride to the top of the mountain [334 m] to enjoy a panoramic night view that is ranked among the top 3 in Japan.

Day 3 – Shikotsu-Toya National Park Sightseeing
In the morning, head to Hakondate Fresh Seafood Market called “Hakodate’s Kitchen.” The market boasts over 200 stores offering take-home seafood products and fresh produce.
After Hakodate sightseeing, we head to Mount Yōtei, an active stratovolcano located in Shikotsu-Toya National Park. It is designated as one of the ‘100 famous mountains in Japan.’ You will enjoy trekking, as well as other nature related activities. Once you take a big breath of the great outdoors, we are going to head back to Sapporo for the evening

Day 4 – Departure
After breakfast, you will transfer to Sapporo airport for your departure.
